Dear Mr. Ben Ashcroft,

Today we are here together to celebrate the launch of English version ofHuman Freedom and the Values of the True, the Good, and the Beautifulby Feng Qi. Feng Qi was one of the founders of  Philosophy at East China Normal University. The publication of the English edition is a great news for the Department of Philosophy. Next year will be the 110th anniversary of Feng Qi’s birth and the 30th anniversary of his passing away. The publication of the book is a wonderful tribute to him. On behalf of the Department of Philosophy at East China Normal University, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to colleagues of De Gruyter Brill and ECNUP for their great efforts for the publication. I am also proud for the translation group of Haizhen Weng, Prof. Zhenhua Yu, Prof  Hua'nan Gong and others. We are working on the translation and publication of the other two volumes of Feng Qi’s Treatise of Wisdom:Knowing the World and Knowing the Self andThe Dialectics of Logical Thinking. I wish a remarkably fruitful collaboration for us.

上帝毁了人类的通天之塔(the tower of Babel,人类要自己造世界桥(the bridge of the earth)。

Freedom, truth, goodness and beauty are common values recognized by human beings. Through translation, we can find similarities between the discussion ofziyou, zhen, shan, meiin the Chinese world andfreedom, truth, goodness, beauty in the western world, which may be the significance of translation. According to the Bible, Lord feared thathuman beings speaking a single language and using the same words would constructthe tower of Babel and heconfused their speech, so that theywould not understand what they say to one another. Human beings were unable to work with each other and werescattered all over the face of the earth. In a sense, translation could be deemed as a human cause to go against the will of the Lord. While the Lord confounds the language ofhuman beings, causing them unable to understand each other, human beings try to understand and cooperate with each othersscattered all over the face of the earth by translation. While the Lord destroysthe tower of Babel, human beings createthe bridge of the earth on their own.

十多年前,国际知名刊物《当代中国思想》(Contemporary Chinese Thought)出版了冯契哲学专辑,译介了冯契在1944年完成的硕士论文《智慧》(On Wisdom”),以及冯契在1994年发表的《〈智慧说〉三篇导论》(“Inquiries into Wisdom: An Introduction to the Three Essays on Wisdom”)。

More than twenty years ago, an item inEncyclopedia of Chinese Philosophy, edited byA. S. Cau, introduced the originality ofFeng Qi’s philosophy, stating: “He focused his lifelong effort on the time-honored problem of how to “transform knowledge to wisdom” and tried to solve it by constructing what he calls “epistemology in a broad sense.” More than a decade ago, the internationally recognized journalContemporary Chinese Thoughtpublished aspecial issue onFeng Qi’s Philosophy, translating and introducing his master’s thesis “On Wisdom” completed in 1944, and “Inquiries into Wisdom: An Introduction to the Three Essays on Wisdom” published in 1994. Twoguest editors of thespecial issue, Professor Yang Guorong and Huang Yong, both are influential scholars in the Chinese and Western philosophy world, wrote in the introduction: “Feng Qi explored many areas of Chinese and Western, ancient and modern philosophy, but he was always most concerned with the idea of wisdom.

Transforming knowledge to wisdom is a long-standing question, which is not only discussed byBuddhist school of Consciousness-only but also byFeng Qi. In the rise of AI, how totransform knowledge to wisdom is a fundamental issue of the times. Francis Bacon's famous dictum, "Knowledge is power", has been a classic expression of modern spirit. However, in these days, it sounds a little bit outdated, and we need to propose more new maxims in line with the trend of the times. Perhaps, we should say, "Wisdom is power"? In any case, more and more readers will find the contemporary value and theoretical potential of theTreatise of Wisdom through English translations of Feng Qi's works. May human’s future be wiser, our tomorrow be more true, more virtuous, more beautiful, and freer!

Thank you!
